Tracking progress to reduce premature NCD deaths by 2030

NCD Countdown is a partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO), The Lancet, NCD Alliance, the WHO Collaborating Centre on NCD Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Modelling at Imperial College London, and a global community of researchers and practitioners.

Tracking progress towards SDG target 3.4, it provides impartial evaluation of progress made by governments, multinational organisations, and donors in preventing and controlling NCDs, raising public awareness, and informing evidence-based advocacy.

In 2015, world leaders committed to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.4: reducing premature deaths from four key noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)—cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, and diabetes—by one third among individuals aged 30 to 70 by 2030, through enhanced prevention, treatment, and the promotion of mental health and well-being.

Data for accountability and informed policymaking

Every two years, NCD Countdown 2030 publishes country-specific data on SDG target 3.4, detailing mortality rates between ages 30 and 70 from cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic respiratory diseases, as well as rates of decline in these diseases.

It also presents broader mortality data for all NCDs from ages 0 to 80, supporting a more inclusive approach to global health policy.

Publications
To date, NCD Countdown 2030 has published three significant reports, with a fourth report expected in 2025:

This publication outlined achievable scenarios for every country to meet SDG 3.4, emphasising that no country can achieve the target by addressing only one disease. It states, "Achieving SDG target 3.4 is ambitious but every country has one or more pathways to achieve the target by 2030."
