Learnings for NCDs from HIV AIDS experience

The NCD Alliance is well represented at the 6th International Aids Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2011) which starts on 17 July in Rome. HIV and Non-Communicable Diseases a pre-conference event on 15-16 July co-sponsored by the NCD Alliance, will explore ways in which learnings from the HIV scale-up may be leveraged to strengthen chronic disease services. Dr Kaushik Ramaiya from Tanzania, Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is a keynote speaker at the welcome reception. At the same event, World Heart Federation Board member Dr Srinath Reddy, is speaking on the emergence and implication of NCDs in low- and middle-income countries.

In additon, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Centre for Operational Research and MSF have guest-edited a supplement on programmatic and operational challenges in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. The supplementfor the Journal of the International AIDS Society, has been guest edited by Dr Rony Zachariah (Médecins sans Frontières, Belgium) and Prof Anthony D. Harries (The Union/Centre for Operational Research). Publication of this open access supplement is timed for IAS 2011.

Also during the IAS conference, Dr. Meg O'Brien, Director of the UICC Global Access to Pain Relief Initiative project, is presenting a poster on access to morphine.
