Millennium Development Goals

The omission of NCD indicators in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been a central barrier to securing donor funding for NCDs. Many donors exclusively fund the health priorities contained within the MDGs despite the fact that NCDs cause 14 million annual premature deaths in LMICs.

The MDG Review Summit, which took place 20-22 September 2010 at the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, was a major success for the NCD community in advocating for inclusion of NCDs and their risk factors in the MDGs. The inclusion of NCDs in the final outcomes document issued by UN Heads of State positions NCDs as a key issue for inclusion in the 2015 MDG successor goals, and recognized NCDs as a core development issue requiring urgent action.

The NCD Alliance is currently preparing plans for the 2013 MDG Review Summit in New York to ensure NCDs are high on the agenda, including a discussion on outcomes from the September 2011 UN High-level Meeting on NCDs.Together, we can ensure NCDs are included in the post-2015 UN development goals framework.

Help spread awareness about the integral connections between NCDs and achievement of the MDGs by downloading our MDG factsheet and requesting governments to ensure NCDs are a priority at the 2013 MDG Summit.
